Prior to the procedure, you will be administered local anaesthesia and conscious IV sedation for relaxation and comfort. A small incision will be made in either the wrist or groin. Utilizing direct image guidance through ultrasound and fluoroscopy, the physicians from fibroid clinics insert a thin catheter into the artery at the top of your wrist or groin, guiding it to the uterine artery.
After identifying the blood supply to the fibroids, the physician injects controlled amounts of tiny particles (similar in size to a grain of sand) directly into the small blood vessels that nourish the fibroids. Following the completion of the procedure, you will be observed for a brief duration in our onsite recovery room. Following your UFE procedure, you will be discharged on the same day to commence your recovery. Anticipate experiencing mild to moderate pain and cramping in your lower abdomen and pelvis during the initial 24 to 72 hours after the procedure, resembling sensations felt during a regular menstrual cycle. This discomfort will be managed with prescribed pain medications and is expected to diminish rapidly over the subsequent days. Patients undergoing UFE typically resume regular activities after approximately 7-10 days. During this period, it’s advisable to refrain from heavy lifting, strenuous tasks, sexual intercourse, and adhere to any additional recommendations provided by your doctor.
What To Expect After UFE
